Coloured glasses workshops
Youth for Understanding (YFU) is one of the oldest and biggest international exchange organizations for the youth, a worldwide educative non-profit organization with the goal to promote international understanding and world peace. Initially it started as an exchange program between Germany and the United States and now operates in over 50 countries.
As part of the YFU network, YFU Vlaanderen vzw shares the same mission and objectives. YFU Vlaanderen works towards this goal by offering exchange programs in 35 countries all over the world. YFU Vlaanderen gives young people (from the age of 14) the opportunity to get to know another culture intensively, which offers them a chance of gaining more self-confidence, intercultural insight, understanding for others, flexibility, respect for different ways of living, and because of this, more tolerance and prospects in their own life. To do this, we provide opportunities for the Flemish youth to live in another country within a host family setup and also go to a local school or take part in a substantive program where they can learn the new culture. At the same time we welcome international students to Flanders to be part of a Flemish family and go to a regular Belgian school.
Intercultural understanding can begin early in life. Thus, YFU Vlaanderen also works with young children (from the age of 4) to raise awareness about other countries and other cultures. Through the YFU Cultural Games we introduce children to other cultures through storytelling, games, visual materials and even songs. YFU offers these cultural games for free to daycare centers and other youth organizations all over Flanders during all school vacations. These games are conducted by not only young Belgians but also non-Belgians to provide a more authentic and real experience about interacting with people from other cultures.
YFU Vlaanderen vzw is an independent organization but works together with other YFU offices all over the world. Internationally there is the YFU-international office based in Brussels. They coordinate and facilitate the work of the national organizations. Also on the European level there is a coordinating organization, called EEE YFU (European Education Exchanges). Every year new YFU offices are opened and new exchange possibilities are offered.
We are a small team of 4 staff members. On top of that there are always 2 to 3 volunteers working in the office.
Next to that we have more then 100 active volunteers who do all the work outside of the office: weekends for the exchange students, interviewing students and hostfamilies, counseling,...
